Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) sits at the heart of what we do at UUSU. We believe that education is for everyone, and it’s our job to break down any barriers that may stand in the way of your student experience being the best it can be.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) sits at the heart of what we do at UUSU. We believe that education is for everyone, and it’s our job to break down any barriers that may stand in the way of your student experience being the best it can be.

We believe that students aren’t just the society and industry leaders of tomorrow; we are leading the charge for change today as well. Through this campaign we are working on the things you want to see change both here at Ulster University, and across society.

  • Building communities on campus
  • Disability Rights
  • International students
  • LGBT+
  • Stopping Spiking
  • Irish Language

Strut Safe is a volunteer-run support line. They will stay on the phone with you until you arrive safely at your destination, no matter where you are going or where you have come from. If you’re walking home alone and would feel safer talking to someone while you make your journey, Strut Safe is here to help.

When you call Strut Safe, their automated system will transfer you to an available volunteer. They will ask your name and location, then chat to you about whatever you want until you are safely through the door.

You can find out more about Strut Safe at StrutSafe and call them on 0333 335 0026. They operate Fridays & Saturdays from 19:00 - 03:00, and Sundays from 19:00 - 01:00.

All of their volunteers go through a thorough interview and training process and they all hold valid Disclosure and Barring Service certificates.

We at UUSU have always believed it is important to celebrate and support the diverse communities we have on campus. Everyone belongs here at Ulster, and everyone is welcome. We feel that message is even more important this year, given the horrific racist and Islamophobic thuggery we saw over the summer.

We will be working with students to celebrate cultural and religious festivals, to encourage the wider student community at Ulster to get involved and learn about different backgrounds, and we will always condemn hate in the strongest possible terms.

Do you have an idea for a religious or cultural event you’d like to work with us on? Get in touch!

Our award winning Irish language campaign is back this year! With pop-up Gaeltachts, working to imbed Irish into how we work as a Union, and of course Seachtain na Gaeilge.

We’re also keen to do more to celebrate Ulster Scots, and to promote sign language. We’ll be doing taster classes and working with students to raise the profile of these languages this year. Have an idea for something you’d like to see? Let us know!
