Judo Magee
Magee Judo Club was revived in 2017, following a resurgence of interest from the student body. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength, growing rapidly and becoming one of the most successful clubs in the university.
We are coached by Jim Toland (3x World Masters Champion, Commonwealth Masters Gold Medallist, British Masters Champion, 6th Dan). Jim has coached judo, sambo, wrestling, BJJ and was awarded his black belt in jiu jitsu. Under his training, we have students, who started judo in this club, competing at over a dozen events each year, including at national level. This success has been recognized at gradings, the UUSU Sport Colours Awards and an impressive haul of medals. In 2019 we were presented with the NI Sports Club Mark, which signifies effective club management, strong community engagement and high-quality coaching & competition.
Judo is an extremely versatile sport, skills from which can be used to compliment other martial arts such as MMA and BJJ, as well as contact sports like rugby and American Football. On its own, it is an excellent form of exercise, improving footwork, cardio, strength and is a highly effective form of self-defence. Anyone can train in Judo, regardless of age, physical ability or condition and we are committed to the UU Women In Sports program.
We have strong links with the local judo community, meaning that as well as the two club training sessions a week, members can train seven days a week in the various local clubs. Any questions can be answered by the UUSU Sport team or by contacting us through our Facebook page @ Ulster University Magee Judo Club
New members are more than welcome to come along, give Judo a try and have the craic!
