As part of this year’s Go Green campaign, we are launching Meat Free Mondays across our four campuses. Through this campaign we aim to raise awareness of the detrimental environmental impact of eating meat, while also improving our NUS Green Impact status. We are proud to be the first university in Ireland to affiliate with Meat Free Mondays.
One day a week can make a big difference. Did you know that the livestock industry is responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions? To put that in to context, the meat industry produces more gas emissions than all planes, trains and automobiles combined. Another alarming fact is that an area of rainforest the size of a hundred football pitches is cut down every hour to create room for grazing cattle.
Eating plant-based for just one day a week is a simple and significant action that everyone can take to make a difference.
This year it’s easier than ever before to eat meat free at Ulster! We have expanded and diversified our catering menus across the four campuses, with more delicious vegan and vegetarian options than ever before.
To raise awareness for this campaign, get creative and share a photo of your meat-free meal with the hashtag #UUSUGoGreen!
