Climate Crisis

Tackling the Climate Crisis is one of our key areas of work at UUSU. We work closely with Ulster University, NUS-USI, and SOS UK (Students Organising for Sustainability,) on this campaign. The only way we will defeat the climate emergency is by working together. We also take part in the SOS UK Green Impact program, to evaluate what we do as an organisation for sustainability, see where we can improve, and rank ourselves against other Students’ Unions across the UK.

Each year we run Green Week, which features an exciting program of events across all UU campuses for students to get involved with. From sustainability fayres, events in our wellbeing garden, debates on climate change and sustainable practices, and a number of activities ran by our societies and student groups.
Are you a society or sports team committee member who’s keen to do something green? Get in touch!
UUSU Green Week coincides with COP – the UN Climate Change Conference. COP 28 will take place 30th – 12th of December 2023.

You told us through student council that you cared about saving the bees. You told us that you wanted more green spaces at UU campuses to be pollinator friendly, and that a plan should be put in place to protect pollinators from pesticides.

We listened, and are working on a plan to convince the University to have wildflower areas, insect hotels, and an estates management plan in place that restricts the use of pesticides and has conditions for use that minimise the impact on pollinators.

Together we are working to make UU campuses a safe place for pollinators. Eager to get involved? Have ideas for how we can save the bees? Get in touch!

We are working on securing space for mindfulness and growing for wellbeing on each campus, as way to improve student mental health and create more green spaces. This work is a part of both our mental health campaign and climate crisis campaign.

We have an established and active wellbeing garden on the Magee campus, where any student can get involved in activities - not just growers, but event-organisers, artists, and folks who just want a space to decompress are welcome. If you’re interested in running a session in the garden or have an idea for something you’d like to see in the space, let us know!
