As part of our Love Week here at UUSU we want to make a commitment to students that we will be tackling Sexual Assaults both on and off campus!
We want to take sure students feel safe both on and off campus, especially on nights out wither it be during Freshers week, celebrating that big night out after handing in that essay or just going for a quiet few with your friends.
That’s why over the next week we will be meeting with bars in the areas of our Magee, Coleraine, Jordanstown and Belfast campus to discuss with them the “Ask Angela” Campaign and how they can sign up to. The campaign poster is a visual aid which might provide a vital life-line to someone who finds themselves in a difficult situation and can’t get out of it. The aim of the Campaign is help those who feel vulnerable in a Bar or nightclub to signal for help.
The poster says…
‘Hi I’m Angela,’. ‘Are you on a date that isn’t working out? Do you feel like you’re not in a safe situation? Is your Tinder or POF [Plenty of Fish] date not who they said they were on their profile? Does it all feel a bit weird?
‘If you go to the bar and ask for ‘Angela’ the bar staff will know you need some help getting out of your situation and will call you a taxi or help you out discreetly – without too much fuss.’
We have also been working with Student support at Ulster, The Rowan and the PSNI to develop a poster which shows student a route in which to take if they want to either report a sexual assault or get help dealing with something regarding a sexual assault. These will be around campus but we will also be asking the local bars promote this as well
If you want to find out more about the campaign or you work in one of the campuses local bars and want to get your business involved just contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information!
