Robert Stewart

External Trustee

Robert Stewart commenced his career in the private sector where he worked in banking for almost 14 years, predominantly in commercial finance as a client manager. Since 2012, Robert has worked in the public sector, specialising in competitive markets and the regulation of utilities. Robert’s recent successes gained within the energy sector include leading the supply price control for Power NI for 2014-17; and leading Phase 1 of the review of the effectiveness of retail energy competition in Northern Ireland.

In 2014, Robert moved to the Competition and Markets Authority as a sector regulation manager and holds a unique position in the organisation as their only full-time employee based in Northern Ireland. The Competition and Markets Authority is a non-ministerial department which works to promote competition for the benefit of consumers, both within and outside the UK, with the aim of making markets work well for consumers, businesses and the economy.

Robert is a graduate of Ulster University where he studied an LL.B. (Hons) Law with Government on a part-time basis. Robert also holds an LL.M. in Advanced Legal Practice from the University of the West of England; a certificate in business accounting from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants; and is a registered ‘PRINCE2’ project manager.
