Meghan Downey, VP Belfast, October Blog

Hey guys!! We started off October with our Course Rep training; it was brilliant to see the all of the students engaged and excited for the upcoming year. Everyone working together and getting involved in the training was a great start to the month.

Working with Wildflower Alley South Belfast community

We also had our Senior Rep residential training which took place in Carrowmena activity centre. It was great for everyone to get to know each other and support one another. So it was great to get to know every one of the senior reps and work together as a team.

I have recently been working on a partnership with the Wildflower Alley South Belfast community. Two Ulster students and I are helping the community in painting and planting, while also getting to know the neighbours. It has been excellent and I hope more students will volunteer and get involved within the community throughout the year.

The sabbatical officers and a senior course reps attended Divestment training by People and Planet during October. It was very informative and interactive; this will be helpful once we have our green week campaign in the second semester. We learned more on Fossil Fuel divestment movement and how we can speak to the university staff and students about this.

I also took part in unconscious bias awareness training along with some of the Ulster staff. This training helped us build our individual awareness of unconscious bias and developing an understanding of the impact unconscious bias has in the workplace.  The training was excellent and I am sure to take this forward within the workplace and outside of the university.

We also set up a few focus groups with the students to get feedback about the Level 5 Union Space. This was very important as the space needs to represent the student s on the campus, especially with the space not being used to its full capability. The focus groups were very valuable and we received a wide range of information in order to construct a space that meats students’ needs.

We also had our Drug & Alcohol Awareness campaign this month ‘Know the score’. We informed students on how to reduce the harm of drugs & alcohol and keeping themselves safe. VP Jordanstown and myself went around the Holylands area, putting up posters and talking to students about our campaign, it was a huge success and a lot of students interacted with it very well.

Well that’s my month for you, hope you enjoyed yours as much as I did!

Enjoy next month!
